Online marketing is very important this day and age.  Everything is shifting to a tech savvy way of life.  Social media marketing and blogging are two great ways to promote your business online.

Social media has a whole lot to offer.  Most businesses with an online presence are already on the social media bandwagon.  What about blogging?  Most of the businesses out there have made mistakes when it comes to their blogging.  This can sometimes hurt your ranking instead of helping you.

Here are a few common mistakes that you should avoid:

#1 – Dumping Content

This is a mistake that people make a lot.  It should be avoided at all costs.  Blogging should be a way to connect with your audience, answer their questions, and provide useful information.  It should not be used to just boost your rankings.  If it is not helpful to the audience, then chances are you have a high bounce rate.

#2 – Copying Content

There are a lot of times that startup companies will want to get their blog up and running so badly that they copy content from other sites and post it on their own blog.  Blogging should be used to prove your stance in the industry. If you copy content, then you will find you can lose your respect very quickly.  You can also lose trust.  Don’t copy and paste information from sites, as this is viewed as content duplication.  Search engines don’t tolerate this.

#3 – Blogging Used for SEO

Blogging and SEO are two completely different things.  Posting new blog posts is not about search engine optimization.  While it may help, you should not consider it to be the sole method for SEO.  If you do, you will soon learn that you won’t gain very much from it.  You might get lots of traffic, but it is usually not going to convert for you.

#4 – Not Having Goals

When you blog without having goals, what is the point?  When you are blogging, you will want to have weekly goals, monthly goals, and quarterly goals.  This will help you to keep track of where you are and where you are going.  You should set attainable goals so that you have a high chance of achieving them through blogging.

#5 – Not Having a Schedule

When it comes to blogging, you will want to have a schedule.  Blogs that die out after a short period of time usually do so because there is no schedule for it.  If you plan to blog, make sure that you have a schedule to go by.  If you don’t, you may find yourself quickly overwhelmed.

#6 – Not Promoting Content

If you have a blog, you will want to make sure that you promote your content to get traffic to it.  You can do this through social media sites.  If you write a great piece of content, but don’t promote it, it is basically like having a billboard out in the middle of a deserted field.  It’s pretty pointless.  Therefore, always share your content with people in your network.

#7 – Test Your Content

All bloggers will want to make sure that they test out new ideas when it comes to their blogs.  This will help them to learn what works for them and what doesn’t.  Once you test certain tactics and analyze the results you will be able to make changes to your strategies.
