Is It Too Late for Online Reputation Management?

It seems as though there are constant news articles talking about how a company made some type of gaff online that caused their reputation to take a hit. Whether it’s a company on Twitter that makes an insensitive remark or a company that takes a controversial political stance, the things that a company or an individual does on the web can cause some serious backlash. If you have found that your company’s online reputation is taking some hits for any reason, then you might be at your wits end about what you can do. Fortunately, it is rarely too late to clean up the problem. You just need to do it the right way.

The first thing you have to do is determine the source, or sources of the problems. Was it something that someone posted from your account or your company’s account? Were your products getting negative reviews because something was wrong with them? Whatever the reason or the reasons for the backlash, you need to pinpoint it and then own up to it. You can’t simply sweep everything under the rug, not on the web. Apologize sincerely, make it up to your customers, and do everything in your power to address the main issue. This can go a long way in helping you.

You also need to remember that the negativity associated with you company has the potential to have a long tail on the search engine results pages. When people look up your company in a few months, they could still find those negative comments and posts from customers. You need to push those results further down in the results. You can do this in a number of ways. Creating more content on your blog, videos, and social media can help quite a bit. Enough quality and good content, and you will see that they rise to the top of the pages, pushing the negativity down.

Creating goodwill amongst your customers and the online community as a whole can be extremely helpful. It might take some time, but you can clean up just about any mess that strikes your online reputation. If you have trouble doing it on your own, consider hiring a third party for some help.
